Classroom: Rooms 4&5 (The Youth room)
Class Times: Sunday 10:00am – 11:00am
Course Description: Confirmation Class is designed to provide knowledge of various aspects of the Christian faith. For the 2008/2009 year, the students will be learning about The Apostles Creed and the New Testament. Confirmation traditionally links the catechumens (those being confirmed) to their baptism and also to celebrate the reception of God’s word among them. The completing of the confirmation program does not make one a Christian, nor does it impart salvation to the catechumens. As stated earlier, confirmation is a custom of the church without any salviphic merits on its own. The joy of confirmation lies in the celebration of the reception of God’s word and the link to their baptism.
Resources: The majority of the class material will be taken from Catechetical Helps: Revised and Expanded, Concordia Publishing House 1997.
Evaluation: Students will be expected to be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of the material being taught in the confirmation class. This may take the form of a written quiz, discussion, or through group work. The goal isn’t to just attend, but to learn as well.
Schedule: Confirmation class meets from 10:00 to 11:00 Sunday morning. From time to time class will not be held. A detailed schedule is presented below. Also go to www.aboitechurch.org to review and print out a schedule. I will also make schedules available during the regularly scheduled class times.
Attendance: Regular attendance is expected and necessary in order to take part in confirmation ceremonies. Students will be allowed 2 absences. Anything over two permitted absences, the student will be required to attend a make-up session. Make-up sessions are held on Saturday mornings at 9:00am.
Parents: In recent years, parents had the option of working as guides within the confirmation program. The guides would work with the students in a small group format. This year we are moving toward a more traditional approach. I will be instructing the students, and because of the format of the class, there is not an opportunity for small group involvement as in years past. You may be wondering what you will do for an hour while your child is in confirmation class. I am happy to announce that there will be adult classes offered in conjunction with the confirmation class. These classes will be taught by Reverend Joshua A. Pagan. If you have attended one of Reverend Pagan’s courses before, you know very well the benefit of attending. So please use this opportunity to not only receive great teaching, but also to model the importance of continual Christian education to your children!
Schedule: The schedule for the adult classes will mirror the confirmation schedule. If there isn’t a confirmation class, then there won’t be an adult class. For the 2008/2009 school year we will be going through The Apostles Creed and the New Testament. The Apostles Creed will be covered the first part of the year followed by the New Testament. Below you will find not only the dates of the confirmation classes but the subject matter as well.

Conclusion: This is the full portion of block 1 of the Confirmation Program for the 2008/2009 year. Block II will begin in January. Please contact me with any questions you have. I’d love to have the opportunity to get to meet with you about any issue, thoughts about the program, or to get together for just general fellowship. Anyway, I look forward to a great year! Even though the confirmation program takes the form of a classroom type setting, I am confident that the students are going to recognize it to be a fun and rewarding time!
